I am driving my truck down a highway which dips up and down like a rollercoaster. I get to the top of one divide and look down into the drop. There is a car blocking my lane. It appears to have been run over from side to side, almost cut in half. I pull out my cell phone as I roll slowly down the hill past the car and into a tunnel where there are more cars in similar condition, smashed and rolled upside down or onto their sides. The 911 operator answers. I begin describing what I see, then notice the paramedics trying to extricate people from the automobiles. “I guess you already know about this,” I say. There’s a garbled reply as I exit the tunnel. I look over the right side into a striped badland. Two dark olive UPS trucks lie in a heap, their broad sides battered. I say to myself “This didn’t happen to me. This didn’t happen to me. Mercifully, this didn’t happen to me.”
