When America gets over its paper cowboy syndrome — that which allows them to be led into war by men who did their best to avoid service in wars — then we will be a free nation once more. The greatest triumph for democracy will be that when the Congress can say no to a president who hungers for fruitless battle. The greatest for culture will be when we realize that John Wayne and Ronald Reagan were just actors.

In two days time, I’ll be on the road to San Mateo for the conference. Miles and miles of cotton, a marsh, and brown hills lie between me and my destination. Unless people are willing to meet me in Buttonwillow or Lost Hills, there won’t be any stops along the way. Just a six and a half hour stretch out of LaLa Land into the Silly Con Valley. Thanks to Lynn for agreeing to go on this trip with me. Having my closest friend along will help quite a bit.
