For some of us, our roots are murky. The leaves of our family trees, dimming out the view above our grandparents or great grandparents. We don’t know where our genes have been.
This list of French-Canadian surnames is a start towards recovering that identity.
Among the discoveries that I have gleaned from this is that the last name “Sawyer” is French.
Are the politically correct of the age ready to change the name of Mark Twain’s book to avoid French overtones? For that matter, the name “Clemens” sounds suspiciously French — almost like “Clement”.
