Whiting Ranch Wilderness was, after all, a ranch, so it’s not surprising to discover relics of the old life like broken down barbed wire fences, poles, concrete watering troughs, and this rusty old metal trough.
I got curious when we walked past it — I was taking pictures so fast that Lynn actually got ahead of me sometimes — and when I peeked inside, I found life. In about six inches of water lived a clutch of pollywogs. I called Lynn over and we watched them swish about along the shallow silty bottom for several minutes.
I won’t tell you exactly where it was because it might bring small boys and other sadists to torment them. But I assure you that if you look carefully about you in Whiting and other natural places, you’ll find small wonders.
