Ebb Tide

Posted on May 20, 2003 in Biomes Book of Days Prose Arcana

Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.

Today’s topic: Write about ebb tide.

Smoky rocks turned ashen as the sun scraped the water off their granitic shellbacks. The splash of the sea kept those in reach of its spattered fingered painted the color of submersion. A few stones in the zone between the high water mark and the low took on a freckled appearance. Tiny crabs, stranded at the upper end of the shingle beach, scurried in panicked disorder as if — no, because — the fluid sky had vanished and they were suddenly exposed to the vastness of space never-ending, thin and difficult to breathe because it was air.
