Three out of the four plants that are depicted in today’s gallery are aliens: escapees from the ranch house garden at the mouth of Moro Canyon or weeds that came with the feed. The Golden Stars and the Cow Parsnips are the scions of California’s pre-contact soil. The field of nasturtiums shown left may lead one to question the wisdom of park policies to eradicate foreign invaders — until one has seen the black sage, the orange monkey flowers, and the deerweed in bloom.

While trying to identify some of these flowers, I came across this site: Berkeley Digital Library Project: Plants. It’s a great place to lose yourself for many hours. The library’s images are not limited to California and they number in the tens of thousands.
