Haze

Posted on June 15, 2003 in Book of Days Weather

Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.

Today’s topic: When the dust settles.

A light haze blindfolded vista seekers today. The smoky film came from elsewhere — off the ocean, out of Los Angeles, or from local Hummer tailpipes. Cows and horses kicked up dust clouds when this was all ranches; an hour or so after the herd passed, the air would be clear again. The exhaust trails of automobiles linger and mix with the fumes from factories. There’s no settling of the modern road dust — it stays before our eyes and our noses until rain wash it down or winds shove it elsewhere, I know not where. Eventually, I think, it comes back to thicken the new soup — stirred up by the rolling of the rubber or brought on a slight breeze, slowly drifting.

Want to participate? First either get yourself a copy of A Writer’s Book of Days by Judy Reeves or read these guidelines. Then either check in to see what the prompt for the day is or read along in the book.

Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about an island.
