Evening July 2003

Posted on July 17, 2003 in Book of Days Poems

Note: This is part of a series based on exercises from A Writer’s Book of Days. It’s something of a rebellion against the Friday Five and similar tupperware content memes.

Today’s topic: In a state of disarray.

Home.
Away for the afternoon because of the heat
I return to the condominium to find it
holding all that I missed in my absence:

The gutted air conditioner
The cat food baking on to the bowl
The cats flopped on the floor
The desk covered with half poems,
quarter stories,
whole books,
empty cups
and post-it pads.

I have discovered my “true, honest, untheoretical self”
and it’s giving me chlorine pains just below the hairline.

Tomorrow’ topic/prompt: Write about a recurring dream.
