Things were different in the 1950s

I learned something last night in my critique group: during the 1950s, high school seniors could watch stag films, get drunk, and dance with “pert” and “plucky” girls and not have a hard on!

Am seeking more information about this fascinating phenomenon. What was it? McCarthyism? Duck and Cover? Wonder Bread? Television?
