Black Helicopters

Posted on January 8, 2004 in Neighborhood

A line of helicopters rides the skyline, west to east. They beat the air steadily, their purpose a mystery to me. When I hear them, I imagine that the blades are clinging to the air, repeatedly grabbing holds that vanish instantaneously. In the dusk, they look black. No lights plumb the ground from their wasp-waists. The grasshopper march passes. Silence comes once more.

I live near the Tustin Naval Air Station where a corps of choppers is based. This happens a few times each month.
