A Week of Passion

Passion has been on the fingertips of many many bloggers. I’ve been mouthing off as much as the next person who hasn’t seen the film, but a few have and commented. Many mock, some revere the film among my friends. I remain guarded in my judgement, though I must admit that there have been some shocking displays of naivite on the part of some people regarding the impact of the film and its meaning. But not among my friends. I only read the best.
Religion
- Camassia reprinted part of a piece from The New Yorker satirizing Gibson’s Hollywoodization of Jesus.
- Among those who went to see it: Jenny and Bill. Good honest assessments by both.
- Jeremy pointed to an article about composer John Debney saying that Satan tried to stop him from writing the music for Passion by crashing his computer. I mocked Debney here and my resident stalker at The Gutless Pacifist threw himself all over the place trying to prove me wrong.
- Teresa revealed who was really behind the crucifixion!
- Michael Bowen complains that his family doesn’t think he’s a good Christian for supporting same sex marriage and not liking Passion.
- Yule wrote of the dangers of iconography — about being hooked in by what we see — a critical article that merits serious consideration by those observing the Passion controversy.
- For those who are sick of reading about Passion, you may enjoy reading Robert Brady’s account of Firewalking at Sugawara. I mentioned this last week, I think: he continues the story, with pictures.
Politics
Culture
- Victoria writes: The other was the Academy Awards. The “ess” ending rears its ugly head to show the “lesser value” of women. First, whenever you see the awards listed, “actor” is always listed before “actress” as women are always listed second, “Husband and wife,” “king and queen”, “Mr. and Mrs.” Then, when the awards are given, they are given in reverse order of importance, with “best picture” being last. And of course, “best supporting actress” is given before “best supporting actor” and “best actress” is given before “best actor.”
- Coup de Vent explored St. Pancras Station.
- Gina complaind about people who whined about being corrected for bad taste in their humor. MetaManda commented: I think she was being a bit hypersensitive about some jokes that probably didn’t even mean what she took them to mean. I tend to side with Gina. The Golden Rule should be taken to mean “Respect the boundaries of others as you would have your boundaries respected.”
- Poetry by Desert Viking, aka The Archaeologist’s Daughter.
- And Nancy Gandhi shared a piece of her work, too.
Personal
- Randy spoke movingly of his late father.
- Crazy Tracy writes of life crisis: Yes, a breakdown of sorts. Maybe even relapse? All the signs are there. All the symptoms are present. The only thing missing is me saying, after the fact, “I never saw it coming.”
- Francis Strand reflected on Leap Year’s Day in Sweden.
- Kimber writes: Ian and I worked out a plan for sitting still at circle time. He gets to bring his rubber lizard, Spots, to school and put him in his cubby. At circle time he can go get him out and hold onto him. If he does a good job at circle time for a week, he gets chocolate ice cream. If he doesn’t, Spots goes in time out, Ian gets doomed for the rest of the day and we start all over again.
- Mary Lou reveals a personal obsession with maps.
- doug explains why he has been a muter troubadour than usual: Five of them have side effects that include dizziness and drowsiness. We’ve added methotrexate, a drug used in chemotherapy which also increases the effectiveness of Remicade. I get an injection once a week. It’s another immunosurrpressant (I take 2 others but it’s the most powerful), so we have to monitor white blood cell counts regularly. But if it works out, I’ll be able to stop 3 of the other meds I’m on.
- Bill writes about the funeral of his uncle who died after a two year battle with cancer of the bladder.
- Happy birthday to Pam!
- Andrea shamelessly relates her struggles to assert herself with her mother and others.
- Stu’s sick. Lynn is not feeling well, either.
Thanks to everyone for a good week of uninhibited and sincere blogging.
