Homosexuals are dangerous. They proselytize. They come to the door, and if your son answers and nobody is there to stop it, they grab the son and run off with him. They steal him. They take him away and turn him into a homosexual.

Welcome to Orange County, California, home of a man who Jimmy Breslin calls a “fruitcake”. New York Jimmy is in trouble because Reverend Lou Sheldon claims never to have said those words. Which is funny because he’s said an awful lot of words like them!
In 2002, the Orange County Weekly compiled a page of quotes by the Chairman Reverend Lou who has claimed elsewhere that there exists a Sodomy Lobby; that he has been marked for death by homosexuals; that “Nature repudiates homosexuality” (he doesn’t consider sheep or rabbits to be natural?); that homosexuals “recruit” in schools; that “Homosexuality is only an underdeveloped stage of heterosexuality”; and plenty of other rhetoric that would land him in a mental institution if he weren’t so effective at getting the lunatic fringe out to vote Republican.
The worst that Sheldon can say about Breslin is that he didn’t get the words down “precisely”*. Which the Right Wing takes as a victory because like all good typo-trolls they believe that the letter killeth. Yea, but the mean spiritness survives. Reverend Sheldon: it’s time to enter the closet for a long long talk with God.
*Which is probably true because if people don’t talk nearly as neatly as all that. Like most of us, Reverend Sheldon probably does not string together grammatically correct sentences when he talks off the cuff. Breslin probably did what most journalists do: he cleaned up that aspect of the Reverend’s utterances so that the man wouldn’t sound like a complete yahoo. Hard job that.
