Recent Hikes

Posted on June 13, 2004 in Hikes and Trails

square197.gifI’ve been completely remiss in reporting my recent additions to LocalHikes.com. There are photographs of the infamous Silverado Motorway and of the more gentle Trabuco Canyon Trail where I will be leading a group of friends this coming weekend.

The excitement over being airlifted led me to forget the rubescent California Mountain King Snake I saw along the side of the Trabuco Canyon Trail and the abandoned gold mine whose bottom was flooded and filled with salamanders.

Today we walked to Chiquito Basin, a descent through oak woodland, chaparral, and meadows steaming with yarrow and buckwheat. No misadventures this time: the temperatures were in the upper seventies and a cool breeze blew over us the entire time. We hunted unsuccessfully for the morteros said to lie within the scrub along the north end of the glade. I’ll put the report and the photos up this week.
