Terry Schiavo 1963 – 2005

square194.gifFinally God or just the proper workings of Nature took Terry Schiavo. This poor woman — a sufferer of mental illness like me whose disease led to the complications which put her in a coma — is now free of the machinations that the Republicans in Florida and Congress used to cover up their corruptions. Her parents and brother must deal with the futility of their grief for the living corpse. Terry’s public life consisted of being propped up like a doll so she could be posed hugging her parents. She made no great public statements, did no great acts. She was used, like a doll, to wave her arms and distract the public’s attention from more serious issues.

The clergy and the politicians who exploited her must now be called to account. It’s time to get back to investigating sexual abuse in the Catholic Church (and elsewhere!) and the Republican plans to fill the courts with working people-hating, nonChristian-hating — just Hating — judicial nominees. It’s time to do something about Karl Rove. It’s time to save Social Security. I doubt Terry Schiavo would have supported any of those awful pogroms.

Thank the Universe that the courts we have now didn’t undermine the Right to Die. Terri Schiavo should never have been this important.

Curious: when reporting the important dates in Terri Schivo’s life, the Washington Post neglects to mention her birth or marriage. The only things that matter were the years of her political prominence. And she had no idea that they were happening.
