Dream

square288.gifI am shopping at Cost Plus, looking for foods that I should not have on the topmost shelves. A member of a writing group I used to be part of comes up next to me. He starts asking my opinion about a room he is decorating, telling me that the dominant color theme will be “orange gray olive green”. I tell him that I cannot grant him an opinion because I don’t know the whole scheme and can’t see it. Irritation crosses his face. He lets me know that he wants an answer anyway.

Another shopper, a Middle-Eastern woman, interrupts. She tells him that no one can proffer an opinion when they can’t see it. He begins talking to her as if I weren’t there. I can see a tired look in her face.

I wander off into a field next to the shelves, walking swiftly so he won’t follow me. I approach a certain tree on the edge of a windbreak of eucalyptus. This tree, as tall as myself, is unique with leaves like chamise, a shape like a poplar, and seeds shaped like small honeycombs. It has a few dead branches, but it is mostly alive. A party of men pass me, looking for a eucalyptus which is heavier and more twisted than any of the others. They talk about how it was shipped and sprouted by accident here. It’s really nothing special — just an oddly shaped eucalyptus.

I walk on, wandering through the long yellow meadows, exploring along a stone wall until I wake up.
