Even though there is no smoke to be seen or reports of fire in the hills, the wind smells burnt. It blows through the streets, cooling nothing. If developers had been thoughtful, they would have constructed pit houses. We’d live underground in refrigerating darkness, perhaps with periscopes to look at the scenery. But they brought New England ideas about what was suitable and raised houses with long windows that let in light and make crucibles of our dens.
