Today we honor Labor. The sweat on arms twisted like steel cable. The hands that move the barcodes swiftly over the laser reader. The eyes that guide the motion of the truck carrying tomatoes or corn to people in the city. The warmth of the feet pushing the lawnmowers around parks and common areas of condominium complexes on a summer’s day.
Hail the hammer that knocks nails into wood or tears them down again. Hail the shovel that cuts into the dirt and throws it into a pile. Hail the computer which transmits accurate news in this age of disinformation. Hail the worn out shoes, the gloves, and safety glasses.
Much labor will be asked of us in the weeks to come, especially in the South. They will ask a portion of our money to “fix things”. The worst of the damage, however, has been done. It could have been avoided if the fires of men and women had been stoked to rebuild the levees and replace the pumps. We cannot fault Labor for these failings, though some will try.
Today we honor Labor which, far more than inherited wealth, has built this nation.
We are overdue for our Lech Walesa. His time is now.
