It’s adios to this series. And for our wrap up, I’ve included a couple of samples of the decorations which various proprietors had put out to draw in the tourists (consider these two gringas for example) and maybe sell to some eccentric such as myself.

Unfortunately, I think the skeleton is more than I can afford.

The original Day of the Dead is coming up on November 17. On this day, the Aztecs ended the party for a sacrificial victim with a few quick slices to the chest. Dinner was served to the nobles afterwards.

I’ve often thought that the Catholic Church rather brilliantly exploited the cannibalistic aspects of the Aztec blood religion. “You mean,” their prospective converts must have said, “we can do this symbolically? COOL!” And so survivals of that old time Aztec religion continue to play out in this season, albeit with more of an emphasis on the prettier aspects of the ancient earth and blood religion.

The two gringas are Lynn and Marisa.

Say, even if you don’t get into this sort of thing, you may well enjoy my City of the Silent site which I’ve linked a few times in the last few days. The original site remains up while I set up a new community-oriented site for taphophiles — those who love cemeteries. You’re welcome to become a citizen of the City, which means you will have access to all kinds of behind the scenes stuff like forums, the power to submit news, access to the membership list (spam emailers DIE), and your own journal space. The price is NOTHING! So why not join?
