Dove Canyon

Posted on November 14, 2002 in The Orange

After dinner, I drove Lynn to pay the water bill at the district office just outside Dove Canyon. Dove Canyon is one of Orange County’s larger “gated communities”, full of insecure elites who tell the rest of us that we have nothing to fear when they are in charge here in America.

I didn’t dare get closer to the entrance than a block . A gigantic American flag waffled in the stiff breeze blowing off the mountain. Bright lights enhanced its brilliance. A cluster of spotlights illuminated the guard shack at the entrance. It was like approaching a border crossing.

I wondered: just where did the residents think America ended and the rest of the world began? I suspect that for many, dining out in Irvine was their idea of a foreign experience.
