People for the American Way have issued a call for the resignation of Trent Lott. Being entirely too lazy to compose my own article asking my readers to sign the petition, I’m just going to reprint their suggested letter:
Dear friend,
Have you heard that Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott suggested that our nation would have been better off had Strom Thurmond won the presidency in 1948? Did you know that Thurmond said during that presidential campaign that “all the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negroes into our homes, our schools, our churches?” Thurmond’s Dixiecrat Party’s platform stated: “We stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race.”
Lott’s praise of Strom Thurmond’s blatantly segregationist presidential campaign is so outrageous it is cause for his removal from Senate leadership. It is not an aberration, but the culmination of a career of consistently opposing key civil rights principles and protections. I just signed a petition urging President Bush to exercise moral leadership and demand Lott step down. It is a national embarrassment to have Trent Lott leading the U.S. Senate. Excuse my sarcasm: it’s a good cause. I’m making fun of myself, not PFAW.
I haven’t stopped by Dalnet #politics since this began. Just the thought of the apologize-oh-matic “a Republican can do no wrong” crowd babbling on about the “meanness” of the Congressional Black Caucus in not accepting Lott’s pathetic apology causes the contents of my dinner to halt in the vicinity of my appendix and consider turning back for where it first came in.
And what’s Georgie thinking? Politics, of course.
