Karen Zipdrive got to talking about the words which reduce a person to their genitalia, such as “cunt”. She and chari, goddess of good karma, both find the word exceedingly vulgar, though one female respondent, mary of Bookblog, felt she had had occassions to use it. I added that “dick” and “prick” were the male variations on the theme and should likewise be avoided.
In a response to an amusing anecdote by mary in which she related an experience with some of her young students, I wrote:
I feel sorry for all the Richards in the world, mary. Most of them are relatively poor, so they can’t call themselves “Rich” and none of them wants to be known as a “Dick”.
Though the word has had slang currency for some time, it seems to me that it has penetrated the language of school kids only in the last fifty years. The word was unknown to most people and the Dicks of the world could walk mostly unmolested. Perhaps it was Nixon and whole Watergate Affair that led to the wider distribution of the vulgar meaning. RMN was a Dick who did a lot of bad things, too!
According to my dictionary of American slang, to “george” someone is to copulate with them. Imagine the possibilities: “Oh, he’s Georging me.” “Bush georges the nation.” etc.
Which leads me to think about that other naughty part of the Resident’s name. Bush. Now “bush” is a nice slang term. My favorite synonym for it is “the fuzzy”. How come this Georged up bit of upper class white trash gets that one?
Oh dear. I just realized something: George Bush. Pretty much describes how he treats women in this country, isn’t it?
For those wanting to look it up themselves, my source is NTC’s Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions by Richard Spears:
george 1. tv. in. to copulate [with] a woman (Usually objectionable)….2. in. to defecate
Did he really need to tell us that saying that “George georged his wife” is objectionable language?
