Open Letter to Jeanne d’Arc

Posted on April 3, 2003 in Reflections

I felt very much alone in the world, an odd duck bleeding from thousands of shotgun pellets and waiting for still more to come from all quarters.

Thanks

Thank you to everyone who responded so quickly to my news of Tracy’s death last night. And thank you to those who will offer their comfort.

She died as I said, in my lap, crying only once, near the end.

War Blogging

Posted on April 2, 2003 in Citizenship Crosstalk Pointers War

I’d like to confront an erroneous view that is going around in some circles, one that is epitomized by the folksy saying that there are three positions on every issue: yours, mine, and the Truth. I feel that this is a cop out, a way of avoiding adjusting your take on events when the facts don’t support it.

Definition for Our Time

America: the one country in the world where running with the herd is considered — nay, touted and extolled — as an act of individualism.

Remember John Komyakevich.

Face it: Americans are now in the habit of rushing to judgement about anyone or anything who makes this war effort look bad. Some shoot to kill.

State of Caring

Posted on April 2, 2003 in Appeals and Goodwill

Old news, but in this time of war, it’s worth a second look.

Do you live in a stingy state?

According to the United Way State of Caring index, the stingiest states in the country are (from bottom to top):

  • Lousiana
  • New Mexico
  • Arizona
  • Mississippi
  • Arkansas
  • Nevada
  • Texas
  • South Carolina
  • Florida
  • Tennessee

Before I gloat, I must note that my home state of California placed 38th — just missing the bottom ten.

The most generous states are:

  • Minnesota
  • New Hampshire
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Maine
  • Iowa
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • South Dakota
  • North Dakota

I can, off hand, see a few rough correlations. Stingy states tend to have the death penalty and vote reactionary. The more generous states tend to vote liberal and don’t usually have the death penalty.

I suspect that support for vs. opposition to Mr. Bush’s war would follow a similar map.

April Foolery

Posted on April 1, 2003 in Pointers

I’ve been threatened with shooting by right wingers for my views enough that I suspect the story about killing the peace activist for his views just might be the truth. If not, it’s a sick joke.
